The City of Selma began in 1820, founded by a
group led by William Rufus King, later elected Vice President of the
United States.
Selma is a beautiful, historic city with many of its structures dating
back to the 1800's. Thousands of tourists come each year to visit
historic downtown Selma and see the beautiful homes and museums in the
area.
Two major events 100 years apart projected Selma into the national and
international spotlight, the Civil War in the 1860's and the Civil
Rights Movement of the 1960's.
Selma was designated the Butterfly Capital of Alabama by the state
legislature in an effort to stimulate the return of the butterflies in
gardens around the city.
Today, the city and county have a diversified industrial and business
base and is home to some 100 manufacturing facilities, employing over
17,000 workers.
The Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce relocated to the
Carnegie Library building in late July 2003. This move facilitated the
consolidation of the Chamber, Economic Development Authority, Tourism
and Leadership offices at the Centre for Commerce, 912 Selma Avenue.
